This year our Halloween Party felt very different! Since we recently moved to Utah for Grant’s MBA program, we have a new house, new set up, and new friends! It was really fun to decorate a new place and change things up a bit. I kept a lot of the same food since it’s always such a hit, but also added in a few new things this year (like the zombie cookies and brain dip). I really wanted to go all out on the decorations and transform the house, so we had an invasion of creepy creatures (spiders, bats, rats, cockroaches, and crows), as well as an abundance of creepy zombies (both with bodies and without) placed everywhere. We brought back the giant spiderweb on the porch as well as a few old favorites, but definitely added in a lot of new decorations this year! I had to take photos in a rush the night of the party, so I didn’t get very many. I went back the next day and took some shots of the decorations so you can see how they look in the daytime and just imagine how creepy they were at night! Make sure to look at my last post to see the invitations I created for this year’s party. The case briefing told our guests where to be and when, and to expect a night full of werewolf hunting! Without further ado, here’s a TON of pictures from the party!

The outside of the house when the guests arrived:

The above pictures are the only ones I was able to snap at night. The rest are from the next day, but you get the picture either way! ;-)

And when the guests walked inside, here ’s the set up they saw:

Then they continued into the kitchen/family room area:

Outside in the backyard we also had a fire pit going for guests to make s’mores. We decorated with a few spooky bats in the trees (which I forgot to get pictures of) and my favorite detail was this creepy ghost girl in the window. Subtle, but terrifying when you finally notice her!

Then back inside, once guests continued down the hall to the bathroom, here is how it looked:

I had so many people tell me they were terrified to go to the bathroom, so mission accomplished! :-) I wasn’t able to do our full-out murder scene like in year’s past because there’s no tub in this hall bath to bloody and leave body parts floating in. I settled for some spooky candlit jars of liquid and body parts though, and I think I was able to accomplish the same effect!

The next part of course was the food! The brain dip was new this year and was a total hit, so I’ll definitely be adding that to the mix for next year.

Next we had the drinks table to the side of the food. We had apple cider with shrunken heads (which I wasn’t able to get a picture of in time), bloody shirley temples, and new this year was blood bags! They were my favorite!!

And lastly, another favorite part of the party to show off is of course the costumes!! Everyone came dressed up and looked great! We set the Photo Booth outside as a way to encourage people to go out into the backyard as well for more space.

We had a huge turn out for the party and had so much fun mingling and hanging out with everyone! After about an hour we started to play games. We started with Salad Bowl as a good group game, and then once the group got a little smaller we played Village Wolves late into the night! The last group left at about 1am and honestly, I could have gone all night—I loved it! We’re so happy that the party turned out well and our guests enjoyed themselves. We even had some best friends drive TEN HOURS out here from California just to come to the party. It was a blast and I’m already looking forward to next year! It really all came together just how I wanted it and I have to give credit all to my mom — the woman is a saint! She flew into town just to help me prep for the party and I definitely would not have been able to get any of this done without her help!! (Hopefully I didn’t work her TOO hard and she’ll still want to come next year too, ha!)

Coming up with the invitations for our Halloween Party every year is one of my favorite parts of Halloween! This year I chose to go with a “Top Secret” Detective theme for the invitations to get our guests in the spirit! The invites included a “Top Secret” case file, newspaper clippings, case briefing, evidence bag with bloodied body parts, and details of course for where to go for the party. See for yourself below! And feel free to leave a comment telling me what you think! I’ve already started planning out the theme for next year. :)

I wanted to finish off the monthly series of Jude’s updates with his final, 12-month, post. He is getting cuter and cuddlier by the day, and I’m not complaining! He’s only grown a little bit this past month, but his personality is changing and he’s really growing up fast! He seems so much older to me than Emery did at this age, but I expect that is pretty typical for a second child since he follows his sister’s example on everything. One of my favorite things I love about him right now is how much he LOVES to dance! Any time there is a tune playing or I start humming or singing, he’ll immediately get a huge grin on his face and start swaying his body back and forth. The kids also watch this channel on YouTube called Little Baby Bum (parents, take note–it is amazing!) that plays videos of nursery rhymes set to weird & colorful videos. It’s one of the few things I don’t mind listening to and it completely mesmerizes the kids! It’s fun to watch Jude watch it because as soon as certain songs come on, like “If You’re Happy and You Know It”, he’ll start clapping his hands immediately! He’ll also attempt the actions of “Head, Shoulders, Knees, & Toes” and “Itsy Bitsy Spider”. It’s adorable!

He’s much more adventurous than Emery was at his age too. Where Emery preferred to hang back and observe, Jude wants to be right in the middle of things. I just got called into nursery (yes, again…I don’t want to talk about it) and he’s not shy at all about playing with the older kids and sharing their toys. Emery, on the other hand, still just wants to grab a toy and play with it by herself for a little bit before joining the others. It’s been really interesting to watch how different they are. Emery never cared for cars or trucks or balls really, but that’s ALL Jude wants to play with. He’s such a boy! He loves to get on all fours and scoot his little cars around in a circle. It reminds me of watching home videos of my brother Trevor doing the same thing when he was little. (I also think Jude looks a lot like his baby pictures too, so we’ll see if that continues!) Jude is constantly climbing onto everything and getting into EVERYTHING, which is also very different from Emery. I had a pretty easy time with Monster. Once I put her down somewhere, I was pretty sure she’d stay there and just watch what was going on around her. Jude on the other hand won’t sit still for a second. Changing his diaper is a constant battle that Grant and I are always saying, “You do it!” over. And giving him a bath? Ughhh. It is the WORST. The second his little naked body touches the water, he squirms and splashes and just goes crazy. I’m not exaggerating when I say his baths last about 45 seconds. Any longer than that and he would flood the bathroom! We’ll let Emery, on the other hand, take baths for half an hour if she wants to. She just sits there calmly or lays down on her stomach and plays pretend with her bath toys. And she’s always been like that! Jude is such a spaz, he can’t not be moving.

And I think the last thing to note is that my little monkey is still such a HUGE “momma’s boy”. Any time I’m in the room he just whines for me to pick him up. It’s really endearing…at first, but quickly gets in the way when I have work to do! It also makes me sad because if Grant tries to hold him, he’ll just squirm and cry and reach towards me until I take him. Part of me loves it, but part of me wants him to grow out of it. (This is another area where the two kids differ because Emery is exactly the opposite! She much prefers Grant to me!)
Jude is a happy, cuddly, energetic little stud and we love him so much! Here’s some more pictures from his quick 12-month photo shoot (you can imagine how these must go, giving the description above) and then one last comparison of Jude and Emery, both at 12 months!
